Planting grass is a simple process that requires correct performance of the specific operations. It is more preferable to do it in spring or in autumn when the soil is warm and wet, but this also can be done in summer provided you may guarantee regular watering of planted seeds. Grass planting late in autumn requires correct calculation of seed time in order the grass could grow up to 10 cm. before first autumn frost hit. Seeding rate depends on type of the soil and conditions at your plot, as well as depends on the type of grass seed mix.
If you consider the soil to be insufficiently fertile (irrespective of the fact whether you treated the soil with the basic fertilizer or not), scatter "starting" fertilizer on the soil surface, which nutrients seeds and fresh sprouts will be utilizing at the first stages of their life, developing powerful root system and strong sprigs. As "starting" fertilizer you may use any mineral fertilizer containing mostly nitrogen, phosphorus and kalium.
There is no need in utilizing "starting" fertilizer if you buy seeds in a nutritious cover. The structure of the cover put on each lawn seed provides a plant with nutritious elements at an early stage of development protects young plants from insects and diseases, improves viability of grass seeds. Such lawn seeding requires frequent and considerable watering.
Lawn seeding should be performed when there is no wind, right after soil loosening and leveling its surface.
Grass Seeding Successful Steps:
1. In order to avoid formation of foot or seeder prints on a loose soil, it is recommended to condense the top layer of the soil before planting grass seeds, using a skating rink, a wide board or a veneer sheet.
2. Use ordinary or radial rakes; perform a slight loosening of the top layer of the soil to the depth up to 3 cm.
3. For more equal distribution of seeds on a soil surface it is recommended to use special seeders.
4. Mix lawn seeds with the dry friable soil, sand or starting fertilizer (if you are using it for the first time) in a proportion convenient for you (1:1, 1:2).
5. Divide this mix into two equal parts - one part should be scattered on a surface of the soil, when you passing your plot along, another part – when across.
6. To protect seeds from being spreaded by the wind or being pecked by birds, it is necessary to strew them with a layer of the soil up to 0,5-1,0 cm. or peat up to 1,5-2,0 cm. and slightly condense the whole structure.
7. The final thing to be done is watering. The most effective time for watering is in the evening due to the fact that vaporizing moisture can damage lawn seeds rather than generate any value.
